Choosing a CCTV system becomes much easier when you start with the property and the result you want, rather than with a long list of model numbers. A good system should cover the important areas, record useful evidence and remain simple enough to operate every day.
1. Decide what you need to see
Walk around the property and list the areas that matter most. Typical priorities include the front approach, driveway, side access, rear door and any detached garage or shed. For each position, decide whether you need a general overview or enough detail to identify a person or vehicle.
A wide view can cover a large space, but faces and number plates become smaller in the image. A narrower view gives more detail at a specific entry or driveway. Many homes benefit from combining both types of view instead of expecting one camera to do everything.
2. Choose a realistic camera count
Two cameras can be a practical starting point for a small property with limited entry points. Four cameras usually provide more complete perimeter coverage. Larger homes, corner blocks and properties with separate structures may need additional cameras.
Allow spare channels on the recorder if you may expand later. For example, an eight-channel NVR gives a four-camera system room to grow without replacing the recorder.
3. Compare the right image-quality features
- Resolution: Higher resolution can preserve more detail, but it also uses more storage and network bandwidth.
- Low-light performance: Look at infrared range, aperture and full-colour night options rather than relying on resolution alone.
- Wide dynamic range: WDR can help at entrances where a bright outdoor background and shaded foreground appear in the same image.
- Lens and field of view: A 2.8 mm lens is commonly used for a wider view, while longer focal lengths provide a tighter view. Always check the official field-of-view specification for the exact model.
4. Decide between PoE and Wi-Fi
A PoE system carries power and data through one Ethernet cable between each camera and the network video recorder or PoE switch. It is usually a strong choice for a permanent multi-camera installation because it avoids relying on the quality of the local wireless signal at every camera position.
Wi-Fi cameras can be useful where cabling is difficult, but they still need a reliable power source unless they are battery operated. Check signal strength, router capacity and the behaviour of the camera if the internet connection is interrupted.
5. Plan recording and storage
Storage requirements depend on camera count, resolution, frame rate, compression, recording schedule and how long footage must be retained. Motion-based recording can use less space than continuous recording, although the result depends on activity levels and detection settings.
Use a surveillance-rated hard drive where continuous CCTV recording is required. If a package is sold without a hard drive, confirm the recorder’s supported drive type, capacity and installation requirements before adding storage.
6. Check the everyday features
Useful features may include person and vehicle classification, phone notifications, audio, built-in lighting, remote playback and privacy masking. Focus on features you will actually configure and use. Advanced analytics do not replace sensible camera placement and appropriate lighting.

- Mark the intended camera positions and cable routes.
- Confirm the required field of view at each position.
- Check recorder channel capacity and camera compatibility.
- Choose storage based on the desired recording period.
- Confirm suitable junction boxes or brackets for the selected camera models.
