Megapixels describe the approximate number of pixels in an image. A 2MP camera records roughly two million pixels per frame, while an 8MP camera records roughly eight million. More pixels can capture finer detail, but resolution is only one part of useful CCTV image quality.

When higher resolution helps
Higher resolution is useful when a camera covers a wide area and you may need to inspect a smaller part of the recorded image. It can also help at important entrances, point-of-sale areas or driveways when the scene, lighting and lens are suitable.
However, an 8MP camera does not automatically guarantee a clearer night image than a well-designed lower-resolution camera. Sensor size, lens aperture, shutter speed, image processing and available light all affect the result.
Field of view changes usable detail
Imagine spreading the same number of pixels across two different scenes. If one camera covers a narrow doorway and another covers an entire front yard, a face will occupy more pixels in the doorway image. This is why camera position and lens choice are as important as the megapixel number.
A wide 2.8 mm lens is useful for overview coverage, while a longer or varifocal lens can place more detail on a distant target. Focal length is not a quality rating; it describes the view provided by the lens.
Storage and bandwidth
Higher-resolution video normally requires more storage and network bandwidth. Modern H.265 compression can reduce the amount of data compared with older compression methods, but the final storage use still depends on frame rate, image activity, quality settings and recording schedule.
Before choosing several high-resolution cameras, confirm that the NVR supports the required resolution, incoming bandwidth, decoding capacity and total number of channels.
What should most buyers choose?
- 2MP: A practical option for basic monitoring, smaller areas and budget-conscious installations.
- 4MP to 6MP: A balanced range for many home and small-business applications.
- 8MP: Useful where extra recorded detail is justified and the recorder, storage and lighting are suitable.
A better way to compare cameras
Compare resolution together with horizontal field of view, low-light specification, WDR, infrared distance, frame rate, compression and recorder compatibility. Where possible, review official sample footage or manufacturer documentation for the exact model.
